ABOUT ME

I have spent 10 years as a caregiver to my parents with Alzheimer’s Disease + Primary Progressive Aphasia.

This qualifies me for nothing other than to share my story.

Originally I thought it best to keep this anonymous and simply share the struggles with emotions that come with being a caregiver or loving someone with such a devastating disease. I have had this domain for two years but have been too afraid to feel vulnerable. The caveat is that I also feel strongly that if we don’t share our stories and put the hardships that come with Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementias out there, nothing will ultimately be done. So here I am, walking the walk.

My name is Lindsay, I am 40 years old. My mother was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia in 2014 and then Alzheimer’s Disease shortly after. I officially moved to Jacksonville, FL to help my father care for her in our family home at the beginning of 2016. Shortly after she passed in 2019, things seemed strange with my father. His original diagnosis was MCI - Mild Cognitive Impairment - and just a year later the one, two punch of an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis came.

My relationship with this Disease has two faces.

Anger. Sorrow. Rage, for all of the things that it has robbed me and my family of.

Graciousness. Patience. Tolerance, as I get to give a little bit back to my parents who did so much for me over the years.

Every day my feelings shift and change, but what remains constant is the hope that there is a Death To Dementia.
